Embroidered Necklace - Multicolored Leaf

$40.00

Why yes, this is an embroidered necklace of a leaf.

Just a leaf?

Yeah. Just a leaf.

This is one of a series of leaves that are coming to the shop in the future. This leaf was made using multicolored satin thread on black cotton, set into a 1” wooden embroidery hoop pendant, and hangs from a 24” bronze chain.

I’m sure you’ve heard of picking a word of the year and maybe some of you have heard of picking a symbol of the year. For me, the leaf is one of my symbols.

2021 is going to be full of lessons, stabilizing, learning more about ourselves and our purpose—I like to visualize this like a tree, shedding leaves to make room for new leaves in the spring. We are “turning a new leaf” in ourselves.

New jobs, personal realizations, pursuits, projects, relationships, methods of communicating and connecting—these are all new leaves that we’ve turned and I love embroidering leaves to represent the inevitability of change and cyclical nature of life.

Sometimes our imagination speaks to us and gives us messages before we even know what those messages are.

When I embroidered this one, I saw an image of a purple poppy with little bees in my head. In later researching the symbolism and significance of purple poppy imagery, learned that its a symbol for imagination, success and luxury. Poppies themselves are symbols of peace, death, and remembrance. Both of these meanings feel so relevant: as often we have to grieve our past selves to find peace, to allow the things that we imagine to come to life.

This purple poppy with bees is embroidered on black cotton, wrapped around a 1” glass cabochon, set into a bronze pendant frame, and hangs from a __” bronze chain.

Everything in life is connected—our experiences, memories, interactions, acquaintances, friendships, emotions make up a series of threads, all interlocking and weaving together to form what we call our sense of self, our identity. Athena, Goddess of War, Wisdom, and Crafts, even punished Arachne for daring to challenge her weaving abilities, and in this way, I believe that Athena embodies that connection of creation, battle, and learning that transforms into wisdom.

While everything I embroider represents a glimpse of my own experiences, as a reflection of the world around me and reflection of you, everything I make is a way that we connect ourselves to each other, learning from our mistakes, weaving strength in our identities, the things that we’ve destroyed, that have destroyed our past selves, and created something new.

Embroidery is my personal tribute to Athena, for the blessings and lessons that I’ve received and want to share, the strength I continue to gain as I war with my own limiting beliefs, and a way that I want to remind you that you are ever growing and shaping into a more beautiful and stronger version of you every day.
